RTA Study Strategies for Success

 

(The ideas listed below are mainly for the student. – BUT it is very important that the parent helps to establish these strategies, especially in the beginning, until the student masters them.  It is then up to the parent to continue to monitor the student’s progress through out his/her junior high and high school years.)

 

ORGANIZATION

  1. Do I have all the supplies I need for my schoolwork?
  2. Do I bring all the supplies I need to tutorial?
  3. Do I keep my notebooks and materials organized so I can easily find what I need?
  4. Do I write my assignments in an assignment notebook?
  5. Do I have an organized plan for completing my assignments?
  6. Do I complete and turn in my assignments on time?
  7. Do I keep track of my own grades so I know how I am doing?
  8. Do I have a plan to complete long-term assignments?

 

LEARNING STYLE

  1.  Do I understand where, when and how I study best?
  2.  Do I use my best style of learning when I study?

 

COMMUNICATION

  1.  Do my tutorial tutors usually see my behavior in the classroom in a positive way?
  2.  Do I usually know what each tutor expects of me?
  3.  Do I effectively talk to my tutors when I need help?
  4.  Do I communicate well with other students and show respect for them?
  5.  Do I talk to other students outside of class when I have missed something in class or need other information?

 

READING COMPREHENSION

  1.  Can I identify topics, main ideas and supporting details in a reading selection?
  2.  Do I understand what I am reading in my textbooks without having to reread it?
  3.  Can I summarize what I read in my own words?
  4.  Can I identify important and unimportant information in my textbooks and handouts?
  5.  Do I preview or survey my textbook section before I read?
  6.  Do I consistently read my textbook assignments?
  7.  Do I have a successful method of learning new vocabulary and remembering it after a test?

 

NOTE-TAKING

  1.  Do I take notes from class lectures?
  2.  Do I get the important points from my tutor’s lectures?
  3.  Do I use different ways to take accurate notes?
  4.  Do I use abbreviations when I take notes?
  5.  Do I turn my notes into effective study sheets?
  6.  Do I combine information from the textbook with my lecture notes before I study for tests?
  7.  Do I review my notes over a period of time (not just the night before a test)?

 

MEMORIZATION

  1.  Do I know different ways to memorize besides reading the information over and over again?
  2.  Do I use different ways to memorize information?
  3.  When I take tests, do I remember most of the facts I tried to memorize?

 

TEST-TAKING

  1.  While taking a test, do I very carefully follow directions?
  2.  Do I use appropriate strategies for taking different kinds of tests?
  3.  Do I keep old tests to use at a later time?
  4.  Do I analyze my errors from old tests to determine a pattern and to decide how to best study for the next test?
  5.  Do I effectively prepare for midterms and final exams?
  6.  Am I satisfied with my study habits?
  7.  Am I pleased with my grades?

 

DOING HOMEWORK

  1.  Do I use an assignment book or the syllabus correctly?
  2.  Do I do homework in an environment that allows me to concentrate?
  3.  Do I spend enough time on homework to do a thorough job?
  4.  Do I follow directions for homework carefully and completely?
  5.  Do I complete all homework by the time it is due?

 

GOAL:  To become a well-organized and independent learner who loves to learn and will carry on these good habits into all aspects of life.
