Overview of class:
This course will introduce students to some of the major authors of Great Britain. Students will be reading literature selections from the following time periods: Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Restoration and the Eighteenth Century, the Romantic Period, the Victorian Age, and the Twentieth century. Students will evaluate literary selections from a Christian worldview and the literature will be interpreted solely on the integrity of the text alone. The elements of expository and persuasive writing will be reviewed within the context of literary analysis. Students will learn how to integrate outside research in their literature responses, history projects, or other writing assignments. Extensive research projects will be created during second semester in conjunction with our study of literature. Students will also analyze several film and stage adaptations of selected texts, discovering modern-day interpretations of classic literature.
Prerequisites for this class: Students must have excellent reading skills (be able to read 20-25 pgs in a book per day, on average), good study habits, and be able to respond to literature in a variety of written forms (essays and literature responses). Students must have access to the Internet for weekly communication from tutor via e-mail, to conduct research, and to access certain texts online.
