Overview of the class:  While we will be using a textbook as the "skeleton" we will put life into this framework by reading wonderful books set in some of the major periods of history.  This class will cover from creation to the landing of the pilgrims in the New World.

Prerequisites for this class:  Summer reading, required:  Streams of Civilization, Volume I, Introduction and Chapter 1.  Also, Many Waters by Madeleine L’Engle.

Class is recommended for grades 7-9.

Average study time for this class:
5-10 hours per week, depending on the speed and skill of the reader.

Tutor Expectations for Parents:  Because we will be using lots of “real books” instead of a textbook, it is absolutely necessary that the students have the books they need by the time we read that book in class!  Look ahead on the syllabus and make sure your student has each book before we start reading it.  I require that the students bring whatever book we are currently reading to class with them each Monday.  We will use the books for class discussions and they MUST have the book with them in order to be able to participate.

Additional comments:  I believe using well-written literature helps put life into our study of history.  While you will need several books for this class, most of these titles can be found at used bookstores or through online sources quite cheaply.  Interests of both male and female students were considered when I chose the books to read for this class.

I have provided the ISBN’s and publisher names but I don’t require that students get these exact editions.  As long as the book is UNABRIDGED I don’t care how old or who the publisher is, etc.  Find bargains at used books stores, it doesn’t matter to me.
