Overview of class:
Students will study the basics of how the English language works. The course will cover grammar, sentence structure, mechanics, punctuation, and usage. Students will copy passages from excellent literature, write their own short pieces, and use textbooks and workbooks in their study of the language. Students will also memorize poetry and prose for recitation. The goal of the course is that students will be able to identify and use the elements of English with confidence in their writing and speaking. Additionally, as students learn to analyze the basic sentence structure they will develop accurate interpretation skills, which will effectively increase their reading comprehension abilities. Another benefit of the course is that students will be able to better grasp the structure of other languages if they have a basic understanding of the structure of their own language.
Prerequisites for this class: Students will need to complete a Basic Grammar Pre-test. Also email a photo and short autobiographical sketch to me by June 1st. (sandybryer@gmail.com)
