British Literature and Comp

Tutor – Ginger McCreery

Course Description

Oh, my, what could be more exciting than British Literature! England-the land from whence all good books come! This course will be taught in a chronological order, covering the major eras of British Literature. Some will be sampled, some will be covered more thoroughly. These include Old English; the Elizabethan Era; the Restoration and beyond; the Romantic Period; the Victorian Period and the Industrial Revolution; the Modernist Movement; and the Contemporary English Literature (we won’t get any more “contemporary” than 1984 by George Orwell). There will be weekly quizzes over the assigned reading; 4 essays, 1 per quarter and 4 exams, 1 per quarter. Come join me as we spend some glorious time with the great minds of British Literature!

Required Text

We suggest that class materials are purchased by mid-June at the latest to allow for any shipping lag times and so that students may have any class-preparatory assignments completed.

While you will need a lot of books for this class, most of these titles can be found at used bookstores or through online sources quite cheaply. Instead of buying an expensive textbook that you will never use again, you will be investing in real books for your student and home. ISBN’s have been provided below, but these specific editions are not required. Bargain books are fine as long as they are unabridged and the student has a physical copy to bring to class.
